After Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky's «Pushkin Speech», Alexander Dmitrievich Gradovsky, a professor at the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University, published an article "Dreams and Reality..." in which he heavily criticized Dostoevsky's literary and political views. Later, the great Russian literary figure published an article in his "Diary of a Writer" entitled "A Pick on the Case", responding to Gradovsky's challenge. This study specifically deals with the thoughts expressed by Fyodor Mikhailovich and Alexander Dmitrievich in the above mentioned articles on the problem of the Russian intelligentsia. Both authors believed that the goal of Russian intellectuals is to serve the people. But they differed in their means: Dostoevsky believed that Russian intellectuals could do this through spiritual development within the framework of Orthodoxy. But Gradovsky supposed that the Russian intelligentsia could truly fulfill its purpose only by actively reforming the political and legal systems.
