Кафедры начертательной геометрии в подавляющих случаях страдают от отсутствия профессионалов в области геометрии. Более того, эти кафедры зачастую возглавляют специалисты, являющиеся профессионалами совершенно в других направлениях (не по 05.01.01). Начертательная геометрия — теория изображений, наука об отображении одного пространства на другое. Кроме этого, начертательная геометрия лежит в основе геометрического конструирования. Эта наука в России продолжает развиваться, хотя и не такими быстрыми темпами, как раньше. Противопоставление начертательной геометрии и компьютерной графики следует считать фатальной стратегической ошибкой — они должны не противопоставляться, а развиваться параллельно друг другу, дополнять друг друга. Начертательная геометрия является последним бастионом перед лицом геометрического невежества, поэтому ее надо не ликвидировать как учебную дисциплину, а наоборот, дать ей новую жизнь. Противостояние между защитниками начертательной геометрии и ее противниками — это противостояние между теми, кто желает готовить творческую молодежь, и теми, кто, может быть, бессознательно, намерен готовить чистых потребителей. Гаспар Монж писал свой учебник отнюдь не для чертежников. Его учебник был направлен не только для выращивания высококлассных математиков и инженеров, но также и для обучения художников: Монж неоднократно обращался к ним со страниц книги. Он предложил разработанный курс начертательной геометрии не как набор занимательных геометрических задачек, а как решение конкретных прикладных проблем, присущих и промышленности, и строительству, и искусству, и военному делу. Журнал, который мы создали, недаром называется «Геометрия и графика», так как геометрия первична, а графика вторична. Начертательная геометрия геометрическую модель превращает в графическую, которую мы можем наблюдать на экране дисплея. Уничтожение начертательной геометрии в вузе обязательно приведет к деградации и примитивизации обучения, а поэтому — к выпуску никому не нужных кадров.

The confrontation between the defenders of descriptive geometry and its opponents is the confrontation between those who wish to prepare creative young people and those who may be unconsciously, intends to prepare pure consumers. Gaspar Monge wrote your textbook is not for draftsmen. His famous textbook was sent for training artists, and Monge has repeatedly appealed to him from the pages of the book.
