Percentage value of late wood relates to the indicators of the macrostructure of wood which are used in practice to determine the quality of the wood. Obviously, the higher the index value, the larger the value of the density wood will have, and, consequently the higher mechanical properties of wood. Nature of the change of indicator is different for different types of wood. The results of research of dynamics of percentage of late wood along the radius of trunk for Scots pine growing in different geographical areas and different growing conditions within the same geographic area are given.

Для оценки качества древесины по внешнему виду используют некоторые характеристики макроструктуры, одной из которых является процентное содержание поздней древесины. Ее физико-механические свойства в два-три раза выше, чем у ранней древесины. Из этого следует, что чем более развита поздняя зона годичных слоев, тем выше и физико-механические свойства древесины в целом. Поэтому процент поздней древесины на практике применяется для предварительной оценки качества древесины и является одним из неразрушающих методов контроля за ним.
