The article analyzes the problem of realization of competitive advantages of the region in the development and in the implementation of its strategy of innovative development. The need for competitive advantages in developing the strategy and the need to build them in the process of implementation are stressed. On the example of the strategy of innovative development of St. Petersburg, problems and contradictions in the implementation of the competitive advantages of regional development are shown. The article has a number of suggestions aimed at improving strategies based on competitive advantages.
