The article shows that, despite the absence of documented rights of a gymnasium student, they existed and really operated in the educational process of the pre-revolutionary domestic gymnasium. It is emphasized that the term "right" was rarely encountered in historical and pedagogical sources in relation to any subject of the gymnasium system. Meanwhile, for gymnasium students, the meaning of the term "right" was contained in the terms "fulfillment of desire", "opportunity". The rights of a gymnasium student were ensured by painstaking and purposeful work on the modernization of gymnasium education, a system of responsibilities of all officials of the gymnasium system - administration, teachers, class mentors, supervisors. The public struggle for the expansion of the rights of the student led, among other things, to the deformation of traditions and the education sector as a whole.
