The publication reflects the main content of the author’s speech at the project session “Regulatory, legal and scientific-methodological support for the activities of school libraries” within the framework of the Forum of teachers of Russian language and literature and teacher-librarians. The features of the work on improving the activities of school libraries, developing reading literacy of schoolchildren, systematization of works included in the federal educational programs of primary, basic and secondary general education are revealed. An assessment is given to the works of fiction by modern authors from the point of view of the relevance of their content for school-age students, educational potential, artistic merit. The problem of selecting patriotic works created by modern writers is discussed.
