The use of animals for obtaining fundamental scientific and medical knowledge has a long history and refers us back to ancient times, when animals were relatively accessible material for studying anatomy and physiology by means of vivisection (from Latin. vivus - live and sectio - dissection). The knowledge gained during that period and throughout subsequent history laid the foundation for modern science and medicine in its classical sense. Despite significant scientific achievements and the emergence of alternative models for scientific testing, laboratory animals are still the most reliable test system that has become widespread. However, such a circumstance is met with a lot of criticism from animal rights activists and is equated to mistreatment in the eyes of the public. In this article, I would like to highlight the philosophical aspects of using laboratory animals from the point of view of philosophy and bioethics in modern realities of clinical research.
