The strategic goal outlined in the Comprehensive Action Plan for Improving the Quality of Mathematics and Science Education through 2030 is specifically addressed in primary school not only through the improvement of subject-based instruction but also through the need to develop the academic independence of young schoolchildren. During competitive lessons, Russia’s best teachers demonstrate mastery of subject content, methods, and techniques for engaging students in new learning. However, the development of academic independence is not always included in the structure of lessons. An analysis of one mathematics lesson in the second grade of primary school revealed resources for effective independent student work.
