This article examines the formation and development of the sport of basketball in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. Based on materials from the central periodical press, the article analyzes the activities of Vsevobuch in the early 1920s to promote basketball among military personnel and pre-conscripts, as well as the organization of the first competitions in this sport. A wide range of published sources and materials from the central periodical press have been identified and reviewed. The article presents the results of the USSR basketball championships, with special attention paid to the problems and difficulties associated with poor preparation of regional teams, lack of knowledge of the rules of the game among players, and insufficient material and technical resources. The authors conclude that the spread of basketball among Soviet athletes began in the second half of the 1920s. During this period, sports sections and clubs were created everywhere, and basketball games were included in the programs of provincial and district competitions.
