The article examines the historical aspects of the origin of biathlon in Karelia. Drawing on archival documents, periodical press materials, and records from the National Archive of the Republic of Karelia, the author analyzes the evolution of militarized ski races in the 1930s–1950s, which served as the precursor to modern biathlon. The study explores historical events that shaped regional biathlon traditions and highlights the achievements of prominent karelian biathletes. Special attention is paid to the development of the competition system and the role of the «Dynamo» and «Spartak» sports societies in establishing biathlon within the Republic. The contribution of the first coaches is defined, and the significance of Petrozavodsk as a center for organizing high-level competitions is demonstrated.
