This article analyzes the case of Harry Davis's voluntary renunciation of US citizenship as the ultimate test of the cosmopolitan imagination in a sovereign world order. Unlike prevailing interpretations, which view this gesture either as an eccentric episode of political idealism or as empirical proof of the structural impossibility of global citizenship, the authors offer a dialectical reading of this experience. It is demonstrated that the renunciation of national citizenship, while politically ineffective in an instrumental sense, possesses significant diagnostic potential. This allows us to identify sovereignty as an essence in situations of exception and legal uncertainty.
