Сonsidered approach to the process of sawmilling from the viewpoint of the notion of «system»; it is shown that currently the leading criterion of rationality of use of raw materials is specified material, but not lumber recovery factor; identified key factors that influence the dispersion of dimensions of sawn wood; it is shown that the reduction in the dispersion of dimensions of sawn wood are possible, including through a more detailed study of the dimensional parameters of the log. The article provides a justification that one of objective the ways out of the systemic crisis is the revision of characteristics of the input stream and the search for new approaches to processing decisions.

Широко известно определение системы, как совокупности элементов, находящихся в связях и взаимосвязях друг с другом, образуя при этом единое целое. Подходя к процессу лесопиления с точки зрения понятия «система», следует выделить пять её основных элементов: входной поток, структура системы, выходной поток, внешнее воздействие, обратная связь (рисунок 1).
