Деревянные дома в России во все времена пользовались большой популярностью по сравнению с жильем из других материалов. Это обусловлено эксплуатационными свойствами самой древесины, относительно простой технологией обработки древесины и строительства деревянных домов, наличием достаточных сырьевых ресурсов, относительно быстрой их возобновляемостью.
