In the present work, the semantics of German phraseological units with the component «grün» in the structure of phraseological units was examined. Semantic shifts were detected in the composition of the studied phraseological units, caused by the multiple meanings of the adjective grün, which has not only the basic, color meaning, but also several other figurative meanings, representing the features of German culture. For the study, phraseological units containing the lexeme «grün» were selected; based on the analysis of the factual material, the following groups were identified: phraseological units describing various signs and qualities of a person and phraseological units denoting negative, especially expressive and figurative phenomena or events.
