The subject of a special study is the consideration of various points of view on L. Leonov's philosophical novel-tragedy «The Thief». This is the first epic text that can serve as a starting point for understanding the entire work of the writer. The novel caused controversy among readers and critics. The main conclusion of the study is the proof that the genre structure of the novel of L. Leonov, conditioned by the social being and artistic consciousness of the writer, was characterized by variability and relative independence. In critical works about the «The Thief», its genre definition has changed over time. However, there is no doubt that the philosophical component dominates in the novel, the setting for a philosophical understanding of being.
