The article discusses the historical stages of urban development. Information is given about the emergence of the first settlements, which were then transformed after unification into small towns. The solutions are shown, thanks to which the city can develop, ensuring the safety of living on its territory. The influence of scientific and technological progress on the emergence of megacities is considered. The main reasons for the growth of cities and their transformation into large megaci-ties are shown. The variant of transformation of cities in connection with strong urbanization into an urbanized country where complete destruction of the environment is possible is considered. The developed examples are considered, which allow, despite the strong development of urbanization, to preserve natural landscapes by creating large parks and squares.
