F.M. Dostoevsky is one of the greatest Russian writers of the 19th century, along with L.N. Tolstoy. Prof. Alexander Dmitrievich Gradovsky — a leading Russian legal and political thinker of the nineteenth century. In 1880, a series of profound discussions took place between them, centered on "Pushkin Speech". The discussion of it became an important event in the history of Russian thought in the 1800s. The current article examines Gradovsky's general attitude towards Dostoevsky, and vice versa. It is shown that Gradovsky's sharp criticism was caused by the weaknesses of Dostoevsky's philosophical worldview. The reverse was dictated by Fyodor Mikhailovich's disagreement with Alexander Dmitrievich's political views.
