Basketball is one of the most actively developing sports among young people. The quality of the organization of events is the most important factor determining the desire of young people to participate in competitions. The author of the article analyzed the statistical data on the participation of student teams of the Northwestern Federal District in competitions and analyzed the data obtained with the economic data of the district. The participation of young people in competitions makes a great contribution to the development of specific territories hosting a certain stage of events. The author has studied the regulatory documents governing the relations of executive authorities, higher education organizations and subordinate institutions responsible for sports training and youth policy in the regions of the North-western Federal District. In the article, the author concludes that the development of sports that meet the needs of young people in self-realization and self-expression affects the development of the regional economy and stimulates the residents’ need for an active lifestyle.
