The article is devoted to the problem of the formation of functional literacy of students in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. The essence of the concept of “functional literacy” is revealed from the position of different authors. The results of the participation of teachers in professional olympiads and competitions of professional skills, held with the support of the regional public organization “Association of Teachers of Biology and Chemistry of the Stavropol Territory,” organizations of higher and additional education of children, are presented and analysed. The results obtained are necessary to understand the level of readiness of the teacher to teach and assess the functional literacy of students both within the lesson and after school hours, improve the quality of general education and regularly apply appropriate teaching methods in science education. Based on this data, it is necessary to develop a strategy to support the teacher in the training system.
