The paper overviews the particularities of teaching professionally oriented English to political science students. The linguodidactic aspect of studying English for Special Purposes (ESP) within the framework of modern communication studies includes both the political discourse analysis and the methods of teaching it. This particularity has determined the composition of the article, which is a two-stage analysis dealing with the political discourse analysis, as well as with the specifics of teaching it to political science students. The topicality of the research lies within theoretical and practical needs to convey the features of the language of political communication to political science students through teaching methods. The objective of the study is to identify lexical, grammatical, and stylistic features of the language of politics in order to optimize the learning process. To achieve the objective a number of tasks have been fulfilled, which involve studying the language material and the methods of teaching it. The research employed a comprehensive set of methods, including analysis and synthesis, continuous sampling, and philological analysis to address these tasks. Authentic texts on contemporary politics and the speeches of American politicians have been studied. The paper is based on the works of Russian and foreign scholars on discourse studies and foreign language teaching methods. As a result of the study, the most typical linguistic, grammatical and stylistic features of political discourse were presented, and methods for mastering them were proposed.
