ETHNOSTEREOTYPES IN TEACHING PROFESSIONAL INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
This article explores the problem of foreign language learners gaining a deeper understanding of Russian character stereotypes. The relevance of this problem is determined by the interest in developing intercultural competence within the theory and methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. According to the author, teaching ethnic stereotypes to Master’s students in linguistics in Russian as a foreign language classes cannot be confined to only depicting an image of Russia, its household and family traditions. A professional insight into “the secrets of the Russian character” requires understanding the sources and roots of particular stereotypes as well as their connections with the Russian axiosphere. The aim of this research is to provide a theoretical foundation and develop a system of tasks that teach foreign linguists to interpret the stereotypes of the Russian consciousness and evaluate them from the standpoint of the values underlying Russian linguistic culture. The methodology of the article combines general scientific and pedagogical approaches including the systematization and theoretical analysis of sources in linguistics and teaching Russian as a foreign language as well as the description and testing of the developed tasks and exercises. The proposed teaching framework explores national character stereotypes and “enigmas” of the Russian soul through authentic materials including fairy-tales, legends, international jokes and academic studies of the Russian language and culture. Systematicity as a core principle of communicative foreign language teaching is achieved through the synergy of linguistic, communicative and cultural aspects of the topic under study.
