EMOTIONAL HEALTH OF DOCTORS: RESULTS OF A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
According to various data, 70-80% of doctors have symptoms of emotional burnout (EV), the consequences of which negatively affect the number of medical errors and conflict situations. The use of emotional intelligence (EI) tools can improve the quality of communication with patients and in the team, enable the doctor to remain calm and reasonable in any situation, and maintain a high level of mental and physical health. Aim. The study of the level of EI, EV, anxiety levels and their interrelationships among doctors. Material and methods. From November 15 to November 30, an online survey of doctors of the Republic of Tyva was conducted using a specially designed questionnaire. It included several blocks of questions: a socio-demographic questionnaire; a questionnaire to determine the level of emotional intelligence by N. Hall; testing to identify the level of emotional burnout by K. Maslach; a questionnaire to determine the level of anxiety by Spielberger-Khanin. Statistical processing was carried out using MS Excel and jamovi programs. Results. A total of 61 respondents took part in the survey, most of whom were women (91.8%), with an average age of 45 (31–54) years. Among the respondents were representatives of 25 specialties, the average length of service in the profession was 22 (5–30) years. 54.1% of the respondents have a low level of EI, the minimum values were found on the subscale “managing your emotions” (57,4%). More than half of the respondents (57,4%) have an average level of burnout, and 34,4% have a high level. 47,5% of the respondents have a high level of personal anxiety. EV is more pronounced in women; the level of EI and EV does not depend on age, marital status, or the presence of children. There is a strong direct relationship between emotional exhaustion and emotional awareness (p < 0.001, r = 0.757). Personal anxiety is directly related to the level of managing one’s emotions (p < 0.001, r = 0.533), the level of emotional exhaustion (p < 0.001, 0.621) and vice versa with self-motivation (p < 0.001, r = –0.533). Conclusion. Medical workers have been found to have a low level of EI development, high levels of EV and anxiety. EI tools can help you work with these indicators, but this area requires additional study.
