The article substantiates the importance of cultivating students' civic conscience through the school subject of social studies. The source and mechanism for developing students' civic conscience is identified as the internal conflict between the "real self" and the "ideal self." To address this conflict, students must be instilled with both the knowledge of the ideal self and the value foundations of the ideal citizen. Social studies, as a school subject, offers significant potential in this area, as it includes specialized sections on morality and ethics. The author suggests applying morality and ethics to schoolchildren's study of the Constitution and the fundamentals of civil rights and freedoms
