THE PERIPETEIA OF GLOBALIZATION: FROM UNIVERSALISM TO THE LOSS OF SELFHOOD
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
This article offers a philosophical-anthropological analysis of globalization as a process that transforms the foundations of identity and cultural memory. It argues that contemporary globalization operates less through direct cultural oppression than through the standardization of everyday practices and the algorithmic organization of behavior, thus producing a regime of cultural neutralization. The study shows that late-modern universalism increasingly functions not as a humanistic ideal but as an instrument of homogenization: local traditions lose symbolic density, while subjectivity is reduced to a functional profile suitable for prediction and governance. Special attention is given to the notion of “genetic memory,” used here in a cultural-philosophical (metaphorical) sense to describe stable patterns of perception, feeling, and thinking transmitted through language, ritual, and historical continuity. The analysis reveals a tendency toward the devitalization of the subject: existentially rich experience gives way to interface-driven scenarios, and critical reflection is replaced by reactive behavioral patterns. In a Heideggerian perspective, this shift is interpreted as a mode of the oblivion of Being in which the human becomes a manageable component of a system. The article concludes by emphasizing the necessity of philosophical responsibility, a return to cultural memory, and the strengthening of critical thinking as conditions for preserving selfhood in a globalized world.
